 Dr Keith Dodd
Welcome to this section which tells you about the Darley and Nutwood Nature Reserve.
Our nature reserve is unusual in having a range of different habitats in a small area within the city boundary.Whilst we have no unique species on the site, there is a wide variety of plants and animals, some of which are uncommon.
The nature reserve offers a very different environment to the more formal parks nearby, and we plan to retain this 'wild' feel and to encourage biodiversity on the site.
We are fortunate to have been designated as a Local Nature Reserve by Natural England. This affords a degree of protection to the site, and supports our main aim of nature conservation.
If you would like to know more about the nature reserve, to join our email list of friends, or to help with surveys or conservation work on the site please contact me by email or by phone on 01332 557249.
Keith Dodd
Chairman of the Management Group.

David and Jean Roberts of Allestree started walking from Allestree down to Haslams Lane and the river Derwent back in 2001. They noticed less birds on the fields where turf is grown as twisted hawthorns were felled and concentrated on Nutwood. They started to keep records of numbers of each species seen and here is the result as it stands today.
David and Jean are members of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Derbyshire Ornithological Society, RSPB and Derby Natural History Society (David is Treasurer of the last).
56 bird species have been observed at Nutwood. This is the page where you can learn about these birds as we have a link to the relevant RSPB page for each of them.
If you think you have observed birds - or indeed other wildlife - contact
Keith Dodd.
If the observation can be authenticated, we will include it on this site with your name if you agree.
